Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association

Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association

The Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) was formed in 1936, when a group of 60 cowboys walked out of the Boston Gardens Rodeo to protest the actions of rodeo promoter W.T. Johnson who refused to advertise the rodeo and add their entry fees to the prize money. The demands of the cowboys were met by Johnson and they formed the Cowboy Turtles Association. The name was so given because like turtles, they were slow to organize but finally stuck their necks out.
In 1945, the Cowboy Turtles Association changed their names to Rodeo Cowboys Association and the modern sport of rodeo was born. In 1975 the Rodeo Cowboys Association became the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association or PRCA, the largest sanctioning body of rodeo in the United States and Canada. The PRCA established its headquarters in 1979 in Colorado Springs.
